What went wrong
The notice saysThe cork sole can detach from the sandal and cause a child to trip and fall.
This was the second time in a few weeks that JP Boden recalled footwear for a fall hazard; the first was Kensington Court Women’s Shoes on July 31, 2013. Here the sole fails; in the other notice it is the heel. The notices are separate, each with its own description and dates, so check every pair you own against its own notice, including pairs handed down between siblings.
How to tell if your pair is affected
Product description in the noticeThis recall involved JP Boden boys' and girls' sandals with cork soles Continental sizes 24 through 37 (children’s USA sizes 8 through 5). The boys' sandals are brown leather with large buckles and a camouflage print on the inside sole of the shoe. The girls' sandals are blue, green or pink suede with a suede ruffle. "Mini Boden" and the sandal size are printed on the inside sole of the shoe.
The notice gives no style numbers or barcodes, so you match on what it does give: the brand and style (Boys' and girls' sandals), the sizes (sizes 24 through 37 (children’s USA sizes 8 through 5)), the sale period (January 2013 to June 2013), where it was sold (see “Sold at” above) and the “made in” label (Vietnam). If a detail does not line up, the recall contact below can confirm.
What the notice tells you to do
RemedyConsumers should take the sandals away from children immediately and contact JP Boden to receive a postage paid label to return the shoes and receive a full refund. JP Boden is contacting purchasers of the sandals directly.
Recall contact, as printed in the notice: JP Boden toll-free at (866) 206-9508 from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET Monday through Friday or online at www.bodenusa.com and click on Product Recalls for more information.
The recall is 13 years old, and the last pairs were sold about 13 years ago. Children outgrow shoes fast, so pairs like these now turn up mainly as hand-me-downs or in resale, where the recall still applies. The notice gives a phone number and a website for the firm; details that old may have changed, and the CPSC notice stays online as the record.
How this recall compares
- With about 900 units, this is the 90th largest of the 95 footwear recalls in our archive that give a U.S. unit count. The median recall in the archive covers about 7,200 units, so this one is well below typical size.
- 26 other footwear recalls in the archive cite the same kind of hazard (falls), 5 of them in children’s footwear. The earliest in this group dates from 1998.
- The notice puts the sales window at about 6 months (January 2013 to June 2013), against a median of 7 months across recalls that state one. The recall came 2 months after the last sale date.
- The notice gives a price of $44 to $48. For sandals, clogs and flip-flops in the archive the typical stated price is about $24, so this pair sat at the pricier end of its group.
- No incidents were reported before this recall. That is true of 36 of the 95 detailed notices in the archive: firms often recall after their own testing or a supplier finding, not after injuries.
Year, part, store and origin
- 2013 brought 8 footwear recalls in our archive, covering about 138,390 units in all. This was the 6th of the year by date and the 7th largest by units.
- The notice names the sole as the part that fails. 3 other footwear recalls in the archive name the same part in their hazard statement; the most recent is Rossignol Cross-Country Boots (2009).
- Made in Vietnam. 6 of the 91 notices in the archive that name a country list Vietnam (7%).
- At the stated price, the 900 units come to roughly $41,000 of retail sales.
Against the other JP Boden recall
JP Boden also recalled Kensington Court Women’s Shoes on July 31, 2013. This recall came in the same month. It covered about 4.7 times as many units (900 against 190). Both are falls recalls, but here the sole fails, there the heel. These sold for less, $44 to $48 against $170.
