What went wrong

The notice saysA small metal eyelet can detach from the inside of the sneaker, posing a choking hazard to infants.

Here the loose piece is a working part of the shoe, not an add-on decoration. Fasteners such as snaps, rivets, zipper tabs and tags are pressed or sewn in at the factory, and when that attachment is weak they can work free with ordinary flexing. Because the part looks like it belongs there, parents rarely think to test it; a firm pull with your fingers is the quickest check.

How to tell if your pair is affected

Product description in the noticeThe recall involves First Impressions high-top, soft-soled sneakers for infants that are crawling or standing. The recalled shoes have blue denim soles and uppers, brown canvas tongues, tan shoe laces and white polyurethane toes. Each upper has eight 3/16-inch eyelets for the laces. The shoes came in sizes 0, 1, 2 and 3. Style number 42090 is on a cloth tag inside of shoe.

What the notice tells you to do

RemedyConsumers should immediately take the recalled shoes away from children and return the shoes to Macy’s or contact Trimfoot for a full refund.

Recall contact, as printed in the notice: Trimfoot at (800) 325-6116 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online at www.trimfootco.com, then click on Recall on left side of the page for more information.

The recall is 12 years old. A child who wore these at the time has long outgrown them, yet sneakers like these keep circulating through younger siblings, swaps and thrift racks. The notice gives a phone number and a website for the firm; details that old may have changed, and the CPSC notice stays online as the record.
