What went wrong

The notice saysThe metal flower on the shoe can detach, posing a choking hazard.

The federal small parts rule sets how small a detached piece has to be to count as a choking risk for children under three. Most shoe recalls in this group came after a firm learned that a decoration was coming off; many notices mention only a few reports. Decorations that look sturdy can still loosen with wear, so the notice’s style details are the thing to match.

How to tell if your pair is affected

Product description in the noticeThe "Joanna" girl’s sandals have an ankle strap, three bands and a flower on top. They were sold in white with a silver-colored metal flower and brown with a copper-colored metal flower in girl’s sizes 8.5 through 10. The name "Joanna," the style number CG40723 (white shoe) or CG40725 (brown shoe) and the size are printed on the underside of the front shoe strap. "StrideRite" appears on the bottom of the shoe.

What the notice tells you to do

RemedyConsumers should immediately take the recalled shoes away from children and contact Stride Rite to receive a prepaid envelope for the return of the shoes. Upon return, customers will receive a voucher for the purchase price redeemable at Stride Rite stores or striderite.com.

Recall contact, as printed in the notice: Stride Rite at (800) 365-4933, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, online at www.striderite.com and click on Product Safety Information under Customer Service for more information or e-mail [email protected].

The recall is 13 years old, and the last pairs were sold about 13 years ago. Children outgrow shoes fast, so pairs like these now turn up mainly as hand-me-downs or in resale, where the recall still applies. The notice gives a phone number, an email address and a website for the firm; details that old may have changed, and the CPSC notice stays online as the record.
